Minnehaha Academy shows off remodel 2 years after explosion

Updated: August 15, 2019 06:42 PM

In less than a week, students will return to Minnehaha Academy's Upper Campus. It will be the first time since an explosion rocked the school two years ago, killing two people.

On Thursday, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS got a first look at the finished remodel. The message throughout the day: The last two years have been a journey.

Minnehaha Academy administrators said students will be greeted with large open rooms with plenty of natural light and room for all students to grow, and educators to do what they do best: teach.

"This reimagined space really integrates history and our legacy, but it also meets the needs of our current students and future generations of students," said Dr. Donna Harris, the president of Minnehaha Academy.

That history is on display in the new building from the bricks, old school memorabilia and tributes to the two lives lost in the explosion two years ago.

The labs and public spaces are designed to fit all sorts of personalities. Just like there are different types of learners, there are different types of personalities and here extroverts and introverts can find a space to feel at home.

"Probably the part I'm most excited about as a principal is the opportunity for students to find different places in the building where they can connect to each other, with faculty and staff," said Jason Wenschlag, principal of Upper School.
