Minnehaha Academy: At a Glance

August 01, 2018 10:45 AM

Minneahaha Academy is a private Christian pre-Kindergarten-12 school. The institution spans two campuses: a south campus with grades Pre-K through 8 and a north campus with grades 9-12.

A Lower and Middle School occupy the south campus and the Upper School houses the high school students. The explosion occurred in the Upper School about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday.

The Upper School building was constructed in 1912 and is three stories tall. It's area, including the basement, is 62,864 square feet, according to the City of Minneapolis.

The school’s first students arrived on campus in September 1913, though the institution was incorporated prior to that.

According to the school’s website, the Rev. Erik August Skogsbergh’s vision of a quality education based around the Christian faith was the impetus for the institution as far back as 1884. In 1911, Skogsbergh and Andrew L. Skoog tasked 11 people, called the Core of Collectors, with raising $100 each toward a new building at the campus.

They exceeded the goal of $25,000 and the first high school students began classes Monday, Sept. 15, 1913.

It wasn’t until 1972 that grades 7 and 8 were added. A chapel was added in 1981 on the newly-acquired land for the South Campus, and by 1982, the Lower School there began serving grades 1-5. Kindergarten was added in 1985, and preschool 10 years later.
