Ten siblings who live in Minneapolis are suddenly without their mother, and their severely injured father remains in the hospital.

Thirty-nine-year-old Ubah Hussen and her unborn child were killed in a vehicle crash Thursday night near Newton Avenue and 14th Avenue North.

On Monday, Hussen's 18-year-old son Omar Ahmed talked about how he and his siblings are learning to live with a new normal.

"I didn't think my mom was going to pass away like this in an accident," Omar said.

Hussen and her husband, Tamam Kharow, have children ranging in age from 3 to 18 years old.

Kharow and Hussen were driving home Thursday night when the couple's vehicle was hit head-on by a speeding vehicle.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Mark Franklin Jr., has been charged with one count of criminal vehicular homicide and three counts of criminal vehicular operation. A criminal complaint states Franklin admitted to an EMS crew that he'd used PCP before driving.

"I don't know how (Franklin) survived and my mom died," Ahmed said.

Kharow survived the collision. Ahmed said he has been to the hospital to visit his father.

"His heart is in a lot of pain," he said.

On Saturday, the family held a funeral for Hussen.

Hussen's family moved to Minnesota two years ago from Kenya for a better life. Ahmed said this was not the future they envisioned.

"The last thing she said to my dad is 'Just hold my hand,'" Ahmed said. "That's the last thing, and then she passed away."

Volunteers from the mosque where the family attends services have stepped in to babysit and handle transportation for the family.

A GoFundMe has also been set up to help the family with expenses.
