The Metropolitan Airports Commission is considering a major overhaul of parking at Minneapolis-St.Paul International Airport.
The reasoning behind the potential changes is twofold. First, airport officials say parking revenue is down, largely due to people getting to the airport using ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft. Also, officials say they want to improve the parking experience for travelers.
"This particular initiative is exploring possibilities of making parking easier and more flexible for customers,"MAC Vice President of Finance and Revenue Development Atif Saeed said.
One idea that's being discussed would involve a pre-booking system. In other words, those visiting MSP wouldn't need to drive around looking for a parking spot at the airport, instead, they would have space ahead of time.
A second idea is offering a dynamic pricing system. Instead of customers paying set rates for parking, prices would vary depending on supply and demand.
The goal is eliminating parking experiences like Marissa Reidy endured Tuesday morning.
"Today it was a mess," she said. "We tried to park in terminal one and it was full."
Airport officials cautioned that nothing is certain at this point, and if any of these changes do go into effect, neither would happen before next spring.
