A man identified as Chris Maurice Welch has been charged in the 2016 shooting death of a 2-year-old boy.

The Minneapolis Police Department said the suspect is already jailed for another crime, and is now charged in the death of LeVonte Jones.

The boy died while riding in a minivan at Penn and Lowry in Minneapolis on July 8, 2016. Police said LeVonte was caught in the crossfire when his mother's boyfriend and Welch exchanged gunfire.

Another child, LeVonte's 15-month-old sister, was hurt in the shooting, but survived. The mother's boyfriend was originally charged in LeVonte's death, but those charges were dropped.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said Welch has been the prime suspect from the beginning, but they didn't have enough evidence to charge him.

"A number of witnesses have come forward ... finally. This was a difficult case to put together," he said.

LeVonte's mom LeShae Jones said that she finally feels justice has been served now that Welch has been charged, but she still hurts and misses LeVonte every day.

"He was a 2-year-old. He was playful, smart, intelligent," she said.
