Minneapolis Police Department Honors Officer Who Saved Life of Shooting Victim

The Minneapolis Police Department held its annual ceremony to recognize the heroism and extraordinary service of several officers.

During the ceremony, Officer Nicholas Kapinos was singled out for his role in making a positive impact on the community.

The department pointed to one specific incident that occurred in south Minneapolis in November. Kapinos was on patrol in the area of 25 Street South and Bloomington Avenue.

While on patrol, he heard the sound of gunfire and went to inspect it. Upon arrival, he located a 26-year-old male victim on the sidewalk.

"I saw he had a gunshot wound on the leg and a big pool of blood surrounding him," Kapinos said. "He wasn't responding.

Kapinos was by himself at the time.

"I was scared and didn't know what to do," he said. "I fell back on my training, I took a tourniquet out of my pocket and put it around his leg."

Kapinos also performed CPR on the victim on the victim until paramedics arrived.

During the incident, there was a crowd of onlookers.

"The officer was very responsive," said Ronald Moore, who was at the scene.

The actions of Kapinos on Nov. 15 touched many at the ceremony Tuesday evening.

"Everything turned out right and he survived," he said.

Other officers were singled out at the awards ceremony for Officer of the Year, Investigator of the Year, Civilian of the Year, MPD Unit Citation, Civilian Award of Valor, Medals of Valor, Police and Civilian Lifesaving Awards and the Chief's Awards of Merit.
