Minneapolis ranks No. 10 among the nation's 100 biggest cities when it comes to best places for an active lifestyle.

Wallethub.com ranked the nation's top 100 cities based on numerous metrics. The No. 10 ranking puts Minneapolis four spots behind Madison, which ranked at No. 6, one spot behind Seattle. St. Paul finished No. 28, five spots above Los Angeles at No. 23.

Chicago, which is ranked No. 1 overall in the sports and outdoors category, tied for first with most swimming pools per capita, basketball hoops per capita and playgrounds per capita. Portland, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Madison, New York, Denver, Boise and Minneapolis round out the top ten.

The website said the rankings were compiled using data that included 34 relevant metrics that include costs of sports apparel, monthly fitness-club fees, bowling costs, sporting-goods stores per capita, baseball and softball diamonds per capita, bike-sharing programs and more. Each category is balanced out to 100 points in weight, with sports and outdoors totaling up to 70 points and budget and participation totaling up to 30.

The rankings included only the cities themselves and did not include rural areas surrounding them.
