For decades, the NFL Draft was held every year in New York City. But the league recently decided to move the draft to a new city each year. That's made hosting the draft, one of the biggest "gets" in sports.
Sports Minneapolis sent director Matt Meunier to Nashville, which is hosting this year's draft, to explore the possibility of bringing the event to the Land of 10,000 lakes.
"This is a common strategy that we have for events on our radar that we'd like to bring to Minneapolis region," he said.
Meunier says he's there to meet with the NFL, and visit sites and event organizers to figure out what it takes to host such an event. So, what's a realistic time frame for Minneapolis getting the draft?
"We heard 2021 might be really strong with cities that were involved in the last bid cycle. So potentially Cleveland, Kansas City and Denver that didn't get a bid the last cycle, so they might be ahead of us," Meunier said.
When it comes to cost, he says they don't have a realistic number at the moment. But, Meunier says Nashville is expecting around 300,000 people from all over the country over three days.
"I know last year Dallas reported an estimate of economic impact of $125 million. I haven't see reports of what Nashville is expecting, it's probably going to be similar," he said.
In 2020, the NFL Draft will be held in Las Vegas.
