Minneapolis City Council has Looming Decision on Tent Encampment

September 25, 2018 10:20 PM

The Minneapolis City Council is set to vote Wednesday on a new location for the homeless camp on the south side of town. Right now, the camp is located just off Hiawatha Avenue near Franklin and 16th Avenues.

Last week, the council focused on the roof depot and Minnehaha Avenue sites with city staff recommending the Minnehaha plot of land. It appeared the council was going to follow that recommendation. But the next day, Friday, they delayed the decision until next week. Later that day Gordon said a third option popped up.

"It's at 2109 Cedar Avenue. It's Amble Box Company and it used to be like a storage facility right up there by the light rail station," Councilman Cam Gordon said.

The third option is a one-and-a-half-acre property at 2109 Cedar Avenue which is owned by the Red Lake Nation.

"The biggest problem with that site that I've heard about so far is that there are some old buildings on it that would need to be torn down," Gordon said.

He says, the city will only be using the land and will not purchase nor rent the property. The city will be responsible for the trailers, connecting utilities and the navigation center.

Gordon held a community meeting Tuesday to inform folks on the status of tent encampment and the third option council is faced with.

"This one clearly has some positives aspects that the other ones don't. The fact that it's also from Red Lake I think adds an interesting dimension to it," a community member said.

Gordon said whatever site is chosen, the project is strictly temporary and a long-term solution must be found.
