A number of metro public housing agencies have opened their waiting lists for the Section 8 Housing Choice Program.

The Metropolitan Council Housing and Redevelopment Authority (Metro HRA), the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority and the St. Paul Public Housing Agency will be accepting applications through June 18.

According to the Metro HRA website, the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority will place 2,000 applicants on the waiting list, yhe Metro HRA will place 2,000 applicants on the waiting list and the St. Paul Housing Agency will place 3,500 applicants on the waiting list.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Program is offered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to "lessen the burden on the family's budget for housing costs, allowing them greater choice in selecting a rental unit," according to the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority.

According to a spokesperson with the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority, this is the first time it has opened its waiting list since 2008. When the waiting list opened in 2008, 16,000 people applied over three days.
