Flu-related illness deaths in Minnesota have climbed to a total of 25, up nine from last week, according to the latest Minnesota Department of Health report.

ABC News reported last week that flu deaths are up 65% nationally in 2020, with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reporting 4,800 people had died and 87,000 people had been hospitalized this flu season. In Minnesota, 981 people have been hospitalized in the 2019-2020 season. The average age of those who have died is 79.


Influenza remains widespread throughout the state.

The metro area continues to see the largest number of hospitalizations, 670 total (68%). Central Minnesota is second with 120 total (12%). A total of 148 hospitalizations occurred the past week. That is down from the previous week, where 243 people were hospitalized.  

School outbreaks of flu-like illness have spiked to 27 this past week, up from 9 last week. 

As of Jan. 16, 36 of 54 jurisdictions are experiencing high flu-like illness. The jurisdictions surveyed include all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, New York City and District of Columbia. All but six jurisdictions are reporting the flu as being widespread, with North Dakota, Vermont, Mississippi, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands and District of Columbia.
