According to the Minneapolis Fire Department, the fall happened around 12:30 a.m. near the University of Minnesota's campus off East River Parkway. A man was walking with someone else when the man slipped and fell over the cliff. He fell 40 feet and rolled or slid another 20 to 30 feet.

Rescue crews were able to attend to him and provide medical care. The fire department determined the cliff was too steep to get the man back up. A technical rescue team used ropes and a basket to lower the man the rest of the way down -- about 40 yards -- onto a boat on the Mississippi River.

His injuries are not known, but he is expected to survive. Officials say the man was lucky he was with someone who could dial 911.
