A man accused of running over a woman in a Minneapolis alley in 2017 was sentenced Wednesday in Hennepin County.

Jeffrey Anthony Cruz pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide and DWI last month.

Court records show he was sentenced to 10 years in prison (120 months) on the criminal vehicular homicide charge, but was given credit for 620 days served. He was then sentenced to seven years in prison on the DWI charge to be served consecutively with the previous sentence. He is eligible for conditional release after five years of the latter sentence.

The criminal complaint in the matter stated that a woman initially told police Cruz was drunk and she didn't want him to drive. According to the report, Cruz told officers he had only had a "couple of beers and she was trying to get him in trouble."

The report said officers told him to leave but not drive.

Police were called again 20 minutes later, the report states, on reports of the couple in the alley arguing.

Then, police were called back by witnesses who reported taking video of Cruz running over the woman. The complaint says she was taken to the hospital where she was diagnosed with brain bleeds, fractured left ribs, a collapsed left lung, a broken jaw and fractures to her jaw and sternum.

The report said the video and witness accounts indicate the woman stood with her back to the van, and Cruz kept inching the vehicle forward while she gave ground. She then reportedly turned around and put her hands on the van's hood. That's when Cruz is alleged to have accelerated, knocking her to the ground and reportedly running her over.

He is reported to have then continued on without stopping. The woman died over two months later.
