A man authorities say drove his car at an officer and damaged an unmarked squad car in Columbia Heights earlier this month is now in custody and facing charges.

The Columbia Heights Police Department said 32-year-old Michael Edward Stephen White has been charged in Anoka County with second-degree assault, theft, criminal damage to property and fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.

According to police, on Nov. 19 around 8:30 a.m. officers responded to the 4200 block of Third Street Northeast on a report of a "suspicious person" sleeping inside a car.

While police were trying to identify the man - who is now known to be White - he allegedly accelerated toward an officer, who jumped out of the way.

White then hit an unmarked squad car, police said, and left the scene.

Police determined the vehicle was stolen from Minnetonka, and it was later recovered unoccupied in Fridley.

White is in custody at the Hennepin County jail on unrelated charges.
