Man Arrested For Stalking, Attempted Sexual Assault After Allegedly Following Multiple Women Home

A Chanhassen man has been charged with multiple counts of felony stalking after police say he followed at least three women home from an event center, confronted them in their driveways and even lifted up one woman's dress.

Police arrested 68-year-old George Jeffrey Carlyle on Wednesday. He's charged with 5th-degree criminal sexual conduct and three counts of stalking.

A criminal complaint details the several incidents which detectives all believe originated at the Metropolitan Ballroom and Clubroom in Golden Valley.

"The concern was that it was happening so consistently," Sergeant Jeffrey Johnson said.

Court documents said the first alleged stalking ended in an attempted sexual assault. The victim told police she drove to her Long Lake home after attending a fundraiser at the event center.

The criminal complaint said the victim told police she was approached by a stranger in her driveway, who asked her for directions. She said as she helped him, he moved closer to her and lifted the back of her dress up. The victim told police she screamed for help and scared the suspect off.

Wayzata police started that investigation and told Golden Valley detectives they suspected she'd been followed from the Metropolitan Club.

"Our police department took a second report of a very, strikingly similar incident that occurred the next night," said Golden Valley detective Rob Zarrett.

Court documents explain the second victim had just pulled into her garage when the suspect, identified as Carlyle, appeared on the driveway.

"He approached the female victim on foot, surprised her, used a rouse to try to get closer to her," Zarrett.

Days later, Golden Valley police set up a surveillance operation at the Metropolitan Ballroom. Johnson said he spotted Carlyle in his car in the parking lot. Court documents said the suspect would "periodically move his vehicle within the parking lot and at one point, backed his car into a parking space in close proximity to the front guest entrance."

Johnson said around 9:45 p.m., he watched a woman leave the venue in her car and saw Carlyle following her.

"We actually caught him in the process of following another victim to their residence," Johnson said.

Johnson initiated a traffic stop in Shoreview and placed Carlyle under arrest.

Investigators say there could be more victims and are asking anyone who experienced a similar incident to call the Golden Valley Police Department at 763-593-8079.
