Major Construction Kicks Back Off at MSP Airport

March 01, 2018 09:20 PM

Major construction projects are about to get back underway at Minneapolis-St.Paul International Airport after a brief break for the Super Bowl last month.

"It was about a two-week lull, but not much more than that," Metropolitan Airports Commission Vice President of Planning and Development Bridget Rief said Thursday.

Here's a rundown of some of the new projects expected in Terminal 1:

  • The south end of the ticketing level will be expanded, similar to the north-end expansion which was completed in January.
  • Work will continue on a new skyway connecting T1's Concourse C and the new InterContinental Hotel, which is expected to open this spring.
  • A new south security exit will be installed, along with new escalators and elevators in the baggage claim level.
  • Work will continue on a new T1 parking ramp.
  • And 30 new restaurants will be added, including an expanded food court.

"I want people to know it's going to be wonderful when it's finished and to please bear with us," Rief said, adding the T1 work will cost about $100 million - not including the parking ramp, which will cost an additional $260 million.

Altogether, the construction is expected to last another four-to-five years, with the end of 2019 expected to be the peak.
