Lake Shamineau flooding creates problems for Morrison County residents

Updated: October 23, 2019 06:11 PM

The rainy summer and fall we've had is having a major impact on residents living on a Morrison County lake. They say homes are flooding because of rising water on Lake Shamineau.

"This last six inches just went over the edge," Cheryl Koll said.

Cheryl and Bob Koll have called the shores of Lake Shamineau home for 50 years. When they moved here in 1970, the water was 7 feet lower than it is now. Shamineau is a basin lake, which means it has water flowing in and holds it because there's no outlet to let it go.

"This is insidious, it continues to rise, rise, rise, and unless we do something man-made, we're not going to get rid of this water and save our properties," Cheryl said.

Bob is on the Lake Improvement District Board. He said for the last two years they've been working on a solution. The fix would be to create an outlet for the excess water.

"We'll be pumping water from the lake 7 feet under with a pipe under a road to an area where we can develop some ditches to pump that water to," he said.

Bob said the water would eventually go to the Long Prairie River. He said the cost is just over $2 million.

Cheryl said the state should share some of the cost.

"We don't own the lake, the State of Minnesota owns the lake. And the State of Minnesota, in my mind, should be charged with caring for their property," she said.

If finalized, Bob and Cheryl are hoping construction will begin this spring, and pumping the water will have started a year from now.
