KSTP Year in Review: 2017's Top 5 Outdoors Stories

December 30, 2017 07:04 PM

Lake Mille Lacs was the center of several stories, especially when it comes to the walleye population. The story above aired in the end of August.

Minnesota is a state of 10,000 lakes and lots of fishing, which is definitely evident in KSTP's most read outdoors stories of the year.

1. 3-Year Walleye Deal on Mille Lacs Angers Some Resort Owners

2. State Record Eelpout Caught on Lake of the Woods

  • A northwest Minnesota man now holds the state record for largest eelpout. The DNR says Brent Getzler of Roosevelt caught a 19 pound, 9 ounce eelpout in the Minnesota waters of Lake of the Woods.

3. DNR Strips Public Status from 640 Miles of Minnesota Streams

  • The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources abruptly removed 640 miles of streams, rivers and ditches from its inventory of public water in June. The DNR issued the order quickly after it uncovered a procedural error made in the 1980s. The Minnesota Center of Environmental Advocacy has since filed an appeal with the state Court of Appeals in an effort to reverse the DNR's decision.

4. Scientists Look to the Past to Figure Out Walleye Collapse on Lake Mille Lacs

  • Researchers took core samples  in February from the lake bed to figure out when the spiny waterflea arrived. It's a tiny invasive invertebrate called Bythotrephes that messes up the bottom of the food chain. The spiny waterflea arrived in Minnesota from the ballast of ships on Lake Superior. It's been in Lake Mille Lacs since 2009.

5. White Bear Lake Homeowners Gain Court Victory Over DNR

  • White Bear Lake Homeowners won a lawsuit in August they had filed five years prior, claiming the DNR issued too many well water permits which led to excessive ground water pumping and extreme draining of the ground water around White Bear Lake over the past 10 years. District Court Judge Margaret Marrinan sided with the homeowners' arguments and ordered an immediate freeze of all new well water permits in a 5-mile radius around the lake.
