KSTP has obtained a federal memo detailing the new ban on bump stocks, promised by President Donald Trump.
Bump stocks have been controversial because they enable semi-automatic guns to fire rapidly. The device was used in the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting that left 58 people dead and hundreds injured.
The memo, circulated by the Department of Justice, is being sent to law enforcement agencies and gun shops with a federal firearms license.
More from KSTP:
The ban requires owners discard, destroy, surrender or turn a bump stock over to the authorities within 90 days of the rule going into effect. The memo does not specify when the new rule will begin.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives estimates there are half a million bump stocks in circulation; however, there are no exact numbers.
