Justin Timberlake is used to being the one doing the singing.

But the halftime performer at Super Bowl LII Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium was the one serenaded by a pair of reporters during the NFL's official halftime show press conference Thursday afternoon at the Hilton Minneapolis.

The occasion was Timberlake's birthday Wednesday.

In between the singing though, Timberlake said he was excited to return to the Super Bowl halftime stage for the first time since a controversial appearance with Janet Jackson in February of 2004.

"I'm excited to be on this stage once again at this point in my life," Timberlake said. "It's a great opportunity. I feel so grateful everyday to have the chance to bring people joy by doing the thing I love to do most which is to write and perform music."

Timberlake also said he's been enjoying his time in Minnesota so far.

"Minnesotans have completely debunked the rumor us southerners thought was true of people from the north - that they're not as nice as us," he said. "Everybody has been great.I wish you'd turn the heat up a little bit, though."

Timberlake also said he'd been to Murray's Steakhouse in downtown Minneapolis.

"I ate my weight in steak," he said. "I slept for about 12 hours afterward."

He also praised late Minnesota music icon Prince, himself a Super Bowl performer in February of 2007. He called a listening party at Paisley Park Thursday night a "bucket list item" for him.

He fielded plenty of questions about his friendship with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who will lead his team against the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday's game.

"Tom's great," he said. "He's the greatest guy of all time. It's official. He's definitely the type of guy that you'd invite over to watch the Super Bowl with you. Unfortunately, he's always in the Super Bowl."

Left unasked were any questions about the 2004 performance in which Timberlake pulled off part of Jackson's outfit, briefly exposing a breast. The controversy was dubbed "Nipplegate."

Timberlake did mention Jackson, along with his old bandmates in NSYNC, Jay Z. and Chris Stapleton as names that have gotten odds in Las Vegas as far as possible special guests.

Though he said he was not revealing any surprises that may be in store Sunday.
