Family Mourns Mother Who Died Monday After Being Struck by Car in St. Paul Last September

Joy Hundley died at the age of 52 Monday.

She had suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car while walking across the street at the intersection of Robert Street and Fillmore Street in St. Paul in September of last year.

"It's been a very rough week," her daughter Jennifer Hamborg said. "We have our ups and downs - take turns breaking down pretty much."

Hundley was hit by a car driven by Gary Schmalz. He was sentenced in February to five years probation and 30 more days in jail after pleading guilty in December to two felony counts of criminal vehicular operation.

He had already served 79 days in jail.

But now that Hundley has died from what they believe are injuries caused when Schmalz hit her, family members say he should face further charges.

"He did it once and paid his price," daughter Morgan Medved said. "And he did it again, and this time he killed our Mom and he only got 30 days for that. You can never replace our Mom."

According to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office, since Schmalz has already been sentenced, he will not face any further charges now that Joy Hundley has died.
