The 2019 JDRF One Walk got underway Saturday morning at Mall of America in Bloomington.

Among those on hand to take part in the event was 15-year-old Caroline Schlehuber, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of three.

She said it was her 13th time participating in the event, meaning she has been part of it almost all her life.

"What I love about this walk is the energy this building fills with," she said. "I remember that feeling and it helps me power through the entire year."

The goal of the event is to raise $1.7 million for JDRF research and create a world without type 1 diabetes. Organizers Saturday morning told KSTP they were close to reaching their fundraising mark.

And Schlehuber said the walk could not be more important for those facing the same issues she does.

"Everyday is a different challenge to face," she said. "No day is the same with diabetes. When you're living with it, you just have to know how to navigate those challenges and live your healthiest and best life."
