St. Paul police said the report of a 3-year-old child in a stolen vehicle Monday was unfounded.

Around 2 a.m. Monday, the child's father told authorities he was picking up takeout from a Denny's along Snelling Avenue and left the sleeping child in the backseat. At that point, the vehicle was stolen.

Police said the suspect and vehicle were found near St. Cloud, but a child was not in the car.

Later Monday, officers said the child was located and is safe with family members. Authorities confirmed the report the child's father gave that the child was in the vehicle at the time it was stolen was incorrect.
