Inauguration ceremony set for U of M president Gabel

Friday, Joan Gabel will be officially welcomed as the University of Minnesota's 17th president.

Although Gabel has been serving as president of the university since July, Friday's inauguration makes the role official.


Gabel became familiar with the university this summer and Friday marks the big celebration of her role.

Gabel is the first ever female president in the university's history.

She has said one of her main goals will be to keep down tuition and student debt.

Leading up to Friday's inauguration, Gabel took part in four days of hands-on experiences at the school. 

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS was there when she visited the St. Paul campus, the Bell Museum and the Bee Lab.

Friday, the formal ceremony installing Gabel will take place at 9 a.m. at the Board of Regents Office.

Although that event is not open to the public, everyone is invited to join the procession to the steps of Northrop auditorium, where the inauguration will take place.

The new university president will give her address at 11 a.m.

As part of Gabel's inauguration, she will visit each campus this fall, starting in Morris on Monday.
