The popular Ice Castles attraction may not be returning to Stillwater this year after all.

Last year, the castles were built in Excelsior due to construction near the site in Stillwater. But, the Stillwater City Council voted earlier this month to allow the attraction to return to the city this year.

However, on Monday, Ryan Davis, the CEO of Ice Castles, confirmed to KSTP that the attraction likely won't return to Stillwater this year due to a concern over high water levels on the St. Croix River.

Davis said Stillwater isn't officially out of the running, but the river levels are a big concern.

It's still unclear where the ice castles may be built this year, but Davis confirmed they've applied for a special event permit in Lake Elmo and another location, which Ice Castles declined to identify.

Davis said they hope to finalize their decision on where to build the attraction this year by later this week.
