A stretch of eastbound Interstate 94 was closed for several hours Sunday evening in Minneapolis while police investigated a fatal shooting on the city's north side.

According to Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder, police responded to a report of a shooting around 5:18 p.m. near Dowling Avenue and I-94. Officers found the victim, a man believed to be in his 30s, in a car on the highway. He had no pulse and wasn't breathing.

Officers attempted CPR on the victim, and he was rushed to North Memorial Health Hospital, where he died a short time later, Elder said.

Investigators say two people got into an argument outside their cars on Dowling near I-94 when one shot the other. Both of the people involved then got in their cars and drove off. The victim drove down the eastbound ramp onto I-94 and went off the road, crashing into the meter lights before coming to a rest near the concrete median on the left shoulder.

The highway was closed between Interstate 694 and Broadway Avenue for more than five hours Sunday night while police worked to clear the scene.

This is the 61st homicide in Minneapolis this year, according to Elder.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office will identify the victim in the coming days.
