Just over two years ago, the Elks Club in Hutchinson decided they were going to build an all-inclusive playground. At that time, the park only had a playground that catered to able-bodied kids. The new set up would allow kids with special needs to enjoy their summer in the park.
Both Stacey Schumann and Sara Thode wind of what the Elks club was doing and wanted to be involved. They each have a child with a congenital heart defect. Thode's daughter Zella is unable to walk.
"The only thing she could really do is be on the baby swing," Thode said.
They soon started 'Heart Hop' to bring awareness to congenital heart issues and started raising money. Through their efforts over two years, they've raised $14,000.
Things have gone so well, the Elks club is expanding the playground. The cost for the playground with the new expansion will come in around $160,000 and will be finished this fall.
