A Hugo man was sentenced to two years' supervised probation in connection to an attack on paramedics in January.

Troy Matthew Basco, 19, was convicted in Anoka County court Wednesday of felony fourth-degree assault. He was accused of biting, hitting and kicking paramedics while being transported in an ambulance.

According to the criminal complaint, paramedics were transporting Basco from Hugo to Regions Hospital for a reported LSD overdose.

Paramedics told police Basco was "out of it" and didn't present any problems at first. But they say Basco panicked and began fighting when they tightened a blood pressure cuff.

The complaint says Basco tried biting one paramedic and hit and kicked them both. One reported suffering bruises to the back, while the other suffered internal rib contusions.

Both were taken to Fairview Hospital.

The ambulance driver managed to pull off to the side of the road, where Lino Lakes police responded and helped restrain Basco before he was taken by another ambulance to Regions.

Basco's probation includes conditions he not possess firearms, refrains from alcohol and drugs, not register to vote until discharged from probation, completes a teen challenge program, submits to random urine tests, and others.

He was also ordered to complete 30 hours community service.
