Hopkins police on Monday identified the off-duty detective who was struck and killed by a vehicle while riding a bicycle early Sunday morning in Rogers.

Police said Kevin Hegyi, 45, was the detective killed. He was a 7-year veteran of the department.

Rogers police responded to a crash involving a bicyclist on the 22600 block of Industrial Boulevard at around 12:14 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Lifesaving efforts were attempted, but Hegyi was pronounced dead at the scene at around 1:02 a.m., according to police.

"From there, we did make family notifications ... the captain, myself, one of our chaplains met directly with the family members," said Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson.

Police said the driver of the vehicle is cooperating with the investigation.

Hegyi was a seasoned detective on force, a field training officer and a leader in charge of the SWAT team.

"And he had many accommodations and awards with this department including life-saving medals," said Johnson.

Biking was a passionate hobby for Hegyi.

"So, he had been training for that to lead the SWAT team for this run for this officer who died in the line of duty," said Johnson.

He was a man who immediately made an impression, from his first interview to his last shift, an impression the Hopkins Police Department will never forget.

"He stood out and like 'Wow this guy's life experience,'" said Hopkins Sergeant Mike Glassberg. "He's been in the community, down to earth guy and we grabbed him up. He's an amazing, amazing guy."

Not only was he a committed officer, he was a committed husband and father to three. At Monday's press conference, police said Hegyi was well-respected in the department and the community, and said he had a great passion for his job. They also said he constantly talked about his kids and how important they were to him.

"If anything to be remembered by, he set an example of how to be dad. A lot of us who have children respected him because of that," said Glassberg. "He was amazing with his kids — always, always was talking about his kids."

A procession was held to a funeral home at 3 p.m. Funeral details will be announced at a later time.

A fundraiser has been started in memory of Hegyi. You can find a link here
