The Freeborn County Sheriff's Office says about 50 goats died as a result of a barn fire Monday night near Hayward.

A release said the dispatch center received a report of a fire on the 21000 block of 840 Avenue North around 8:40 p.m. When deputies and the Hayward Fire Department arrived on scene, they found flames coming out of the roof and both ends of the barn.

The barn was a total loss, according to the release. In addition to the goats, whose value was estimated at around $20,000, a livestock trailer loaded with hay and about 80 hay bales were also lost.

The total estimated loss has been placed at around $80,000. The cause of the fire is not yet known, and the State Fire Marshal Division has been contacted to assist with the investigation.
