A 53-year-old Hampton man has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide in connection to a Valentine's Night crash that left a 49-year-old woman dead.

Court records show Michael James Serres was charged earlier this month. The criminal complaint alleges he admitted to consuming 10-to-12 alcoholic beverages at a nearby restaurant prior to the crash.

According to the state patrol, a pickup truck rolled into a ditch on County Road 50 just north of Cannon Falls late on the evening of Feb. 14.

Officials said 49-year-old Terri Stephenson of Hampton was a passenger in the pickup and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the rollover crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, identified as Serres, reportedly suffered minor injuries.

The criminal complaint alleges law enforcement noted "the smell of consumed alcoholic beverages emanating from his person." He reportedly refused a preliminary breath test, but law enforcement noted that merely holding the PBT in front of his face led to the machine registering the presence of alcohol.
