Grinch Strikes Before Christmas at Blaine Home

A homeowner in Blaine says a real-life Grinch struck his home just before Christmas.

Jordan Schmidt came home to a crime scene Wednesday. Burglars had reportedly unwrapped Christmas gifts under the tree before deciding what to steal.

"We go into Christmas empty-handed," he said.

Schmidt said he reported the robbery, which included thousands of dollars worth of missing electronics, jewelry and purses, to police. The burglar took only small items that were easy to carry.

He hopes police can find who broke his window and entered his home. But home burglaries are difficult to solve.

According to statistics tracked by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, only 16 percent were solved last year - the lowest clearance rate for all criminal offenses.
