Friends, Family Gather to Remember Philando Castile 2 Years After His Death

Friday night marks two years since Philando Castile was killed. Former St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez shot him during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights.

Castile's girlfriend livestreamed the aftermath to Facebook.

Prosecutors charged Yanez, and a jury cleared him of all wrongdoing.

Castile's death sparked outrage and protests across the Twin Cities then. Now the community is trying to come together to heal.

In Falcon Heights Friday, a candlelight vigil was held for Castile, where the message was unity.

A peace garden at the place where Castile was killed is a living memorial. It's the place people gather on anniversaries.

Friday night, his family and friends came to the garden to make sure their message to the community goes on.

A candlelight vigil began just after 9 p.m. Nearly 200 people gathered together in silence. They heard from several friends and family members of Castile.

Since Castile’s death, his family has spent time trying to help the community heal.

His uncle Clarence Castile said this two-year anniversary is important, and it was important to have everyone come together Friday night.

He said you can't just forget about what happened.

Family members continue to call for accountability in policing and say this day will stand as a reminder for the rest of their lives of the day a new purpose began.

“You think about what happened, naturally. Normally you think about what happened and the horrible thing and the fact that he ain't here,” Clarence Castile said. “Then we think about the things we've done in this two year period. All the good things that’s come out of it.”
