A father of a three-year-old child is dead after he jumped into the water of Detroit Lakes to save the child Saturday evening, according to the Becker County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office responded to the report of the incident at around 8:22 p.m. Saturday.

The father, identified as Christopher Franklin Nicholas Schultz, 31 of Frazee, reportedly jumped into the water to save his child who had fallen into the water from Long Bridge at Dead Shot Bay, Detroit Lakes, a sheriff's office press release states. The father began to struggle while keeping the child above water.

Bystanders reportedly went into the water to bring the child to shore, but Schultz never resurfaced.

Officers from the Detroit Lakes Police Department, the sheriff's office, along with St. Mary's EMS personnel immediately began searching for Schultz. At around 9:07 p.m., those searching for Schultz, including fisherman and the Becker County Dive Rescue Team, found him.

Schultz was then transported to St. Mary's/Essentia Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The child sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, the release states. 

The incident was under investigation Sunday afternoon.
