On August 15, authorities received a call from a person who said he had been attacked with a metal pole. The person identified the suspect as his neighbor, Pavelich.

The caller said he and Pavelich had been fishing together that day and when they returned to Pavelich's home, Pavelich accused the man of "spiking" his beer.

After receiving the call reporting the assault, officers arrived at the scene and noticed a shotgun with the butt stock removed and replaced was in the residence. Authorities said the gun's serial number had been scratched off. Additionally, a metal tension bar was on the lawn outside the residence. The bar matched the description of the item with which the man said he was assaulted.

The man who placed the call "was in and out of shock," according to the complaint, and was taken to a nearby hospital. Authorities noticed his leg had been disfigured. The man also had marks, bruises and discoloration on his arms, legs and back. Additionally, the man had two cracked ribs, a bruised left kidney and a fractured vertebrae.

Pavelich was arrested for assault. He has been charged with second-degree and third-degree assault, as well as possession of a short-barreled shotgun and possession of a firearm with a missing or altered serial number.

During his initial court appearance, Pavelich was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.

Pavelich, 61, played high school hockey for Eveleth-Gilbert. He went on to play three seasons as a center for UMD from 1976-79, where he was an All-American selection. He was also part of the famous 1980 United States "Miracle On Ice" Team that defeated the Soviet Union and went on to win the gold medal in the Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York. Pavelich also played in the National Hockey League from 1981 to 1992, mostly with the New York Rangers. He also spent time with the Minnesota North Stars and San Jose Sharks.
