Flooding leaves just one way in and out of Henderson

March 20, 2019 10:18 PM

There is now just one way in and out of town for residents of one Sibley County community located on the Minnesota River.

The Henderson Police Department said that Sibley County Road 6 (Scenic Byway) south of County Road 5 closed Wednesday morning. That leaves just a single route in and out of the city for now.

Flood gates had already gone up in Henderson earlier than city officials originally anticipated as the river continues to rise.

The National Weather Service showed the river was already at minor flood stage in Henderson Wednesday morning, and water is expected to keep rising into next week.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation had already closed Highway 19 to Highway 169 because of flooding. And, Highway 93 south of Henderson also remains closed.

MnDOT said Highway 93 from Highway 169 to Le Sueur would close by 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The river runs right in front of Tom Graham's place.

"The water has raised one foot already since this morning," he said Wednesday.

Throughout the day Wednesday, members of the Henderson Fire Rescue Team checked on homeowners whose properties are vulnerable to spring flooding.

Robert Wagner, who is a member of the team, said anyone who's accustomed to taking Highway 93 or Country Road 6 to work will face an even longer commute. That includes him.

"19 West is the only thing open in Henderson," he said. "It will add an extra 15-20 minutes for me. But, for others going east, it will add 45 minutes."
