Cause of fire at local business in Blaine under investigation

May 23, 2019 09:59 AM

Firefighters worked to extinguish a fire at a design and remodeling company in Blaine early Thursday morning.

The fire occurred at Murphy Bros. Firefighters said they received a call at about 2:30 a.m. reporting the structure fire. By the time they arrived, firefighters said the roof had collapsed.

"Commercial fires are always sketchy," Chief Charlie Smith, of the SBM Fire Department, said. "We oftentimes don't know what's in them like that, but metal roofs don't last long when there's fire underneath them."

A KSTP crew at the scene reported seeing thick smoke coming off the top of the building.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury, according to the crew at the scene.

Firefighters spent the morning cutting into the fallen roof to extinguish hotspots.

Authorities are continuing to investigate what may have caused the fire.
