Officials say a firefighter responding to a medical emergency was killed in a shooting in Wisconsin that left three others injured on Wednesday.

Authorities say police and firefighters responded to the 100 block of E. Washington St. at about 5:30 p.m. to assist a man suffering a medical emergency who was arriving on a bus from out of the area. When officials arrived downtown and assisted the man, the incident escalated into shots being fired, the Appleton Fire Department said in a news release.

Firefighter Mitch Lundgaard, a woman and a police officer were all struck by the gunfire. Lundgaard, a 14-year veteran of the department, was killed. The fire department said the police officer was released from the hospital Thursday and the other victim was in stable condition Thursday afternoon.

The release said the 47-year-old man emergency personnel originally responded to assist was also taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

A procession was held overnight in Milwaukee as the Lundgaard's body was brought to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office. Firefighters lined the street as emergency vehicles escorted the body.

"Today has been a difficult day. There will be many more difficult days to come, not just for our department, but for our community as well," the fire department said in a Facebook post.

The incident is under investigation by Green Bay Police and several other agencies, the Appleton Fire Deparment release said.

The department also said a donation page has been set up to support Lundgaard's family, and details on how to donate will be released in the near future.
