Family saved in Hastings fire by their dog Reese's

Flames ripped through a house in Hastings while a family slept, unaware they were in danger. But the family dog came to the rescue alerting everyone something was gravely wrong.

"It's OK, " Keith Garrick said.

Emotions overtook Garrick and his daughter Emily as they stood outside what used to be their home.

Just after midnight Friday the Garrick house was full of flames and smoke.

"If you look at the three-season porch in front of the house there, that's where the fire was initiated. The flames spread up to the front of the house," he said.

His daughter Emily was asleep with the TV on at the time of the fire.

"I heard my dog freaking out, and then I saw the flames on my window," she said.

Emily says she heard a crackling noise from underneath her room. So she grabbed her phone and ran out the house.

"Reese's, she's the hero," Keith Garrick said.

That's right, the family says the dog woke everybody up in the house to get them out safely.

"They basically had just enough time to get out and then the floor collapsed," Garrick said.

The family lost everything in the fire, but they say they're grateful to be alive and thankful to Reese's.

"My family is here because of this puppy," he said.

The cause of the fire started is still under investigation.

The family is being helped by the Red Cross. The Garrick's have set up a GoFundMe campaign. If you're interested in helping this family click this link.
