Police in Rice Lake, Wisconsin searched for hours Sunday night before finding a two-year-old girl, identified by family as Myah Watters, in the Red Cedar River after they say she wandered away from home.

Police said they received a call at 9:30 p.m. that the two-year-old girl may have been missing for 30 minutes.

"I've been doing this for 33 years almost," Capt. Tracy Hom said.  "Anytime there is a child death, it's very devastating and stressful. This was probably one of my harder ones."

Authorities looked for the girl using a drone, as well as search crews that were on foot.

For more than an hour and a half, the captain says crews searched and prayed Myah would be found.

By the Red Cedar River, about two blocks away from the girl's home, an officer used a thermal imaging camera to find the girl.

"Some officers ran into the river and located her and pulled her out," said Capt. Hom. "It's been very hard. A lot of the officers are having some difficulties with it."

Myah was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

“We want to extend our most sincere thanks to our community, first responders and volunteers for their outpouring of love and support for our family during this tragic time,” said Casey Watters, Myah's grandmother.  “We are incredibly grateful and wish for privacy as we grieve this unimaginable loss.”
