The Minnesota Department of Public Safety will kick off its end-of-summer DWI enforcement campaign on Friday.

Starting Friday through September 2, officers, deputies and troopers from more than 300 agencies will work overtime shifts to provide extra DWI enforcement.


The Dodge County Sheriff, Scott Rose, said 326 people were arrested for DWI across Minnesota over just this past weekend, bringing the total for the year above 17,000 DWI arrests. The sheriff's office said that's about 1,000 more arrests than at this time last year.

According to DPS, the highest number of drunk driving-related deaths occur over the summer months. Below are the numbers from just 2014-2018:

  • June-August: 127
  • March-May: 113
  • September-November: 103
  • December-February: 69

DPS said more alcohol-related serious injuries also occur during the summer months. Below are those numbers from 2014-2018:

  • June-August: 481
  • March-May: 446
  • September-November: 436
  • December-February: 294
