The Ely Fire Department was dispatched at 5 p.m. to a report of a fire at the Grahek Apartments in Ely. Authorities said there were initial reports of flames and smoke coming from the windows of a third story apartment.

Residents of the apartment were safely evacuated to the nearby Ely-Bloomenson Hospital.  A representative with the Red Cross said they helped 11 residents find somewhere to stay overnight.

The Adventure Inn and Super 8 in Ely took in the residents. Residents were allowed back into their apartments Thursday afternoon.

The cause of the fire appeared to be smoking materials and it was ruled accidental.
