Education Minnesota, the state's largest labor union with more than 80,000 members, formally endorsed U.S. Rep. Tim Walz' campaign for governor Saturday night.

"Tim Walz was a classroom teacher for 20 years and is a leader who knows what it takes to prepare each and every student for a successful life," Denise Specht, president of Education Minnesota, said. "His running mate, Peggy Flanagan, has a strong record of advocating for children and families. This is the right team to lead Minnesota for the next four years."

The 24-member board of the Education Minnesota Political Action Committee had set a three-fourths threshold to endorse in the governor's race this year. On Saturday, Walz was the only candidate to meet that criterion; in fact, the vote was unanimous.

"This team will lead the fight for working families of Minnesota," Roxanne Norlin, said. She is a 2nd-grade teacher, and chair of the Education Minnesota PAC, of the Walz/Flanagan ticket.

"They will defend the freedom of working people to come together in unions, invest our state's students, and make sure every CEO and corporation pays their fair share," she added.

The members of the PAC board interviewed the four candidates who sought the union's endorsement on Saturday, state Rep. Erin Murphy, State Auditor Rebeca Otto, U.S. Rep. Tim Walz and former Minneapolis public schools educator Christopher Seymore.

Education Minnesota members were given unprecedented access to the candidates during the 2018 endorsement process. Each candidate visited with educators inside a public school, had face-to-face conversations about economic issues facing working families and the candidates answered a survey of questions submitted by classroom educators.
