Memphis police say a woman was arrested this past weekend after she allegedly placed her 7 and 8-year-old grandchildren in dog kennels during a recent trip in her SUV.

Cell phone video of the incident went viral, showing one of the children getting out of the kennel. According to police, Leimome Cheeks, 62, drove for at least 40 minutes in temperatures as high as 95 degrees with the kids in the cages.

"It's shocking, it really is, I only met her like once maybe twice. She seems like a nice lady. I couldn't see her actually doing that," neighbor Skylarr Blake said.

Cheeks was arrested after a witness sent the video to police. She was charged with two counts of child endangerment.

The suspect told police she placed the children in the kennels but made sure to check on them periodically. Police say the children are doing OK.

Cheeks was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
