The Minnesota Department of Corrections said a corrections officer at the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Rush City was assaulted by an inmate Wednesday morning.
DOC Director of Communications Sarah Fitzgerald said the assault occurred around 7 a.m. at the officers' desk in a living unit at the facility. Fitzgerald said the officer defended herself and other officers responded in seconds, restraining the inmate.

The inmate was removed from the general prison population and placed in restrictive housing immediately. The unit where the incident occurred has been placed on lockdown.
The corrections officer was punched in the face and Fitzgerald said she was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
"Our highest priority at the Minnesota Department of Corrections is protecting the safety of our officers and all individuals in our facilities," Fitzgerald said via email. "An assault on a member of our staff is taken extremely seriously. This incident will be fully investigated, and the offender responsible will be held accountable under the law. We commend our corrections officers for their professional response."
Kathy Chinander told KSTP she retired from Rush City as a corrections officer in 2017 and worked with the officer who was assaulted for 13 years.
"I am angry because she is a fine officer and the DOC does not listen to us," Chinander said. "I have told DOC and others have too that it is not safe enough and we need more officers, but things like this just keep happening."
Chinander said the officer and DOC are lucky things did not turn out worse.
"In my opinion, if things continue like this, we will see another officer killed," Chinander said. "These offenders, a lot of them, are in for life and just don't care if they severely injure or kill one of us and we are not getting the help we need."
In July, corrections officer Joseph Gomm was killed in an attack by an inmate at the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater.
