Police are commending a day care bus driver after a crash in Lakeville that resulted in only minor injuries.

Lakeville Police said Kirstin Davids, 26, was operating a New Horizon Day Care bus traveling northeast on Dodd Boulevard and waiting to turn north onto Foliage Avenue when it was rear-ended by a semi-truck at about 8:53 a.m. Friday. The crash caused the bus to spin across the opposite lane of traffic, enter the ditch and roll onto its side. The semi-truck, driven by Julie Jacobsen, 57, came to rest in the southbound lane.

Two boys and two girls, who ranged in age from 4 to 9, were in the bus at the time. Police said Davids had them all wearing seat belts or in car seats at the time of the crash, and said that's why nobody was seriously injured in the crash.

By the time officers arrived, Davids had removed all children from the bus and was calming them, police said. Two children and Davids were transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

Police said both vehicles were inspected for compliance with safety laws.

The crash remains under investigation.

New Horizon Academy issued the following statement to KSTP Friday afternoon:

"This morning, one of our buses was involved in a traffic accident which required the support of emergency medical personnel. Our staff responded swiftly to comfort and support the children, first responders were quickly on site, and for precautionary measures four children and the driver of our bus were transported to a nearby hospital for observation. At this time, we do not have additional information to share. At New Horizon Academy, the safety of our children and staff is our first priority."
