Crews put final touches on Allianz Field ahead of home opener

Crews put the final touches on Allianz Field in St. Paul on Tuesday. It was also the first time the field was seen with field lines and nets.

On Wednesday, the Minnesota United team will hold its first practice on the field, with the home opener set for this weekend.

The green grass that was showing Tuesday is a far cry from just a month ago when there was over a foot of snow on the field.

But, the club knew it had to be ready for Minnesota's harsh winters, with a heating system installed to help melt all of that snow, and fast.

"In early March, we have a technology that surrounds the field in heat that is actually called a hydronic system that actually allows us to control the root zone temperature, so right now we have it set at 65 degrees," said Ryan Moy, the head groundskeeper.

The grass, which was grown in Colorado, was put down at Allianz Field in early October.

Minnesota United's home opener will actually be late for soccer, but crews said a mid-March opening date is expected in the future, making the underground technology critical.

The club will play at Allianz Field for the first time next Saturday night, April 13, against New York City FC.
