The teenager killed in a crash on Highway 610 in Maple Grove Thursday morning has been identified.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a Ford Taurus was traveling westbound on the highway at about 3:30 a.m. when it struck the bridge abutment on the east side of the bridge at Hemlock Lane. The vehicle then caught fire.
The 19-year-old driver, identified as Cristian John Schmidt of Dayton, was the vehicle's sole occupant. He died in the crash, according to the state patrol.
KSTP Traffic Reporter Josie Smith said the highway was closed for just under four hours while a crew was at the scene.
The state patrol reported it was unknown whether Schmidt was wearing a seatbelt and whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
