Police were called to a storage facility in Cottage Grove Wednesday morning after a reported assault.

Cottage Grove Police said officers responded to Park Place Storage at about 6:14 a.m. on a report of an assault and a person covered in blood in a storage unit.

Police said the caller was giving secondhand information, but showed pictures of a woman bloodied with brass shell casings by her feet to officers that arrived on scene.

"The photos indicated there was a female with obvious blood on her lower extremities, there was a substantial amount of blood on the ground in some pictures, and on a chair in one of those pictures," said Sgt. Mike Coffey with the Cottage Grove Police Department.

Police added the victim's injuries were considered not to be life-threatening.

The department said a perimeter was set up and officers attempted to make contact, but had limited information and only believed a person was injured in a storage unit. Police said officers eventually breached a garage door and found the victim in a unit. After extensive searches, the department said it concluded a male suspect had left prior to their arrival.

Detectives were still on scene as of late Wednesday morning, searching the storage unit. Police said the case remains an active investigation and no other details are available at this time. Several other departments were also on scene to assist.
