Construction is officially underway at a popular icy wonderland.

Ice Castles said it started growing and harvesting icicles earlier this week at the popular attraction's new location in Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton.

Ice Castles may not be returning to Stillwater this year after all

The company said up to 10,000 icicles will be grown and harvested each day over the next three to four weeks as crews build the castles. The icicles are then hand-placed and sprayed with water, and the process repeats until the castles reach a height of about 30 feet.

Opening dates are dependent on weather, but Ice Castles said it hopes to open the attraction in early January.

It's the sixth year Ice Castles has built its winter attraction in Minnesota, but the first time it's been in New Brighton. Stillwater, Excelsior, Eden Prairie and Mall of America have previously hosted the ice castles.
